Mount Ruapehu, or justRuapehu, is an activestratovolcanoat the southern end of theTaupo Volcanic ZoneinNew Zealand. It is 23kilometres northeast ofOhakuneand 40kilometres southwest of the southern shore ofLake Taupo, withinTongariro National Park. TheNorth Island's majorskifieldsand onlyglaciersare on its slopes.
Ruapehu, the largest active volcano in New Zealand, is the highest point in the North Island and has three major peaks: Tahurangi (2,797m), Te Heuheu (2,755m) and Paretetaitonga (2,751m). The deep, activecrateris between the peaks and fills with acrater lakebetween major eruptions.
